A Tribute to Al

Today was a day to talk about my pre-ride on the Wolverine Ridge. However, while meeting team mates in Park City to car pool up to the trail I received a very sad phone call. My husband called to let me know he and Mandy had gotten home and found her guinea pig dead.
Al (the guinea pig) has 2 cages one he lives in and then another big round one he plays in. Mandy forgot and left Al in the big round one while she went with her dad. While they were gone Millie, our lab, broke down the pen, and apparently played with the guinea pig to its death. We have only had AL a very short time because he was a birthday present for Mandy--one she has been asking for, for a long time. And although she had him a short time she was very sad and still is to find him dead. It was hard for me to not be home to comfort Mandy, and broke my heart even more as Royce told me Mandy had Al on her lap and was convinced he was not dead. She tried everything to see if he was alive, she tried to give him food, water and kept thinking he was still alive. My poor husband I felt bad he had to deal with our daughter being heart broken. I don't know if this is something daddies should have to do. Later after Mandy finally realized Al was not alive Royce and Mandy buried him and Mandy put flowers around him.
When I got home I was able to comfort Mandy and let her cry her tears. What a sad day for her.
The only picture we have of Al taken on my cell phone. :-(

Jacob's Ladder

Yesterday I rode with Dot and did Jacob's Ladder for the first time. The ride was planned the day before and I was excited. I have heard about Jacob's ladder, but have not had the chance to experience it. Unfortunately about 10:30 am I got a migraine. I was at work when I got the migraine, so I tried to wrap up phone calls, applications and all other loose ends so I could run home and rest. I got home at 1:15 pm and by this time was feeling miserable. I went to the dark, cool basement and laid down. By 3:15 pm my head was still hurting and I was considering letting Dot know there was no way I could ride, but I just couldn't stand the thought of missing a ride. So I convinced myself my head didn't hurt, packed up and took off to the equestrian center to meet Dot.

True to form Dot was right on time and we took off up the hill towards Clark. I didn't tell Dot about my head, because I knew I would be behind her anyway, today may just be more than I would like (I hate to be the person holding up the ride). We took off up Clarks Trail. I have ridden Clarks one other time up and it was prior to the Draper race, so I didn't remember it at all. I don't know about you, but I have this mental problem when riding a new trail. If is dh I go extremely slow, because I don't know where the turn will end or what comes after the whoop de doo. If it is uphill (which I love) I sometimes will psych myself out that there is never an end and I should take a rest. This was somewhat the case with riding Clarks. Dot made the rule there would be no granny gear, okay, I'm up for the challenge, besides I always try to go in a harder gear when possible I think it is cool to see how I far I can go in the hardest gear. As we go up the trail it does not take long for Dot to disappear. I continue on making sure not to go in my granny gear. My legs are doing great, they don't hurt and they are climbing without any problems. I wish I could say the same about my lungs. No asthma attack, but the heavy breathing and hurting head started to make me dizzy. Ooops this can be a bad thing on a trail with an edge. Eventually I had to do the unthinkable and get off, bring my heart down and rest. This is where the mental part comes in to play, since I didn't know where the end was I stopped. Had I known I could have perservered a little longer, because of course I was almost to the end. Dot came back down and rode behind me, glad I could give her a little bit more hill climbing (someday I will not be that girl). We finished Clarks and continued on towards Jacobs. At some point as we were climbing the feeling of triumph and adreniline came over me. I felt elated and of course my headache was not noticeable (this is not surprising for me as I have often continued playing sports or dancing injured not noticing the pain until later....which of course is good and bad). I began to get more and more into the climb and felt like I was on top of the world. After riding for a bit we came to Jacob's Ladder.

Jacobs ladder was fun. It has rocks you ride down which I like, and some loose areas which I need to practice on. There was one spot I ended up walking due to an earlier skid that caused me to stop, so I lost my momentum. I am hoping to do the trail again and not walk this part. There was one part of the trail that was new. Apparently the old trail went straight down, but now there is a turn to the left, and not a very good one. They are going to have to do something to make it a good turn. The rest of Jacobs was loose dirt from a new trail being dug, which made it very difficult for me to do the remaining switchbacks. I would turn, hit loose, deep dirt and get bucked by my bike. I am sure most people could make this, I just need to get better bike handling skills.

Off of Jacobs we went down Ghost Falls. This is my second time on Ghost Falls and I did much better. Like I posted previously first time on a trail I always go slow and tenative. This time I went a little faster and felt much better about the switchbacks and whoop de doos. The whole ride was great, and I would really like a chance to do it again. Maybe next time I will go in an even harder cog up Clarks!

After the ride I got home, unpacked and sure enough there was my missing migraine back full and stronger than ever. It took me forever for me to go to sleep my head hurt so bad. I am still hurting, but I don't care, the ride was worth any amount of head pain I felt afterwards. It's amazing what the body can do. There are may times I have been able to push past the pain and do many things, but of course the after affects are not always good. Sometimes I am hurt worse than before. In this situation I don't think its the case, I get migraines and sometimes they stay for a couple of days, sometimes they disapper within a few hours, but I didn't want this migraine to stop my ride.

Jackson/Teton Icup Race #11

This race was fun and technical. Mandy had a large division for Jackson and she did very well. Unlike the pre-ride Mandy was able to ride 3 laps. She came in 7th overall and was 1st out of the girls. She looks like she is having fun riding.

My race was great. I started out pulling ahead, but not going too fast as no one was by me until all of the sudden Theresa pulled up right by me. At that point I started to push it so I could get in ahead of her on the single track. However, I didn't need to worry as we got close Theresa let me know she was going to let me in first. This was kind of her, because I know she is strong at downhill and I needed to put some distance between us. Unfortunately this did not work too well. I would get some distance and then get stuck behind a rider or have a slip on a rock. (Note, when you clear everything in pre-ride this may not be a good sign for the race). Theresa came up on me on my slip and was great she got me calmed down and then I started to clear everything and put a little distance between us. However this did not last long as we hit the downhill and came up to the first set of switchbacks...ugh. I take switchbacks way too slow. Eventually there was a spot for Theresa and she passed. I wasn't too worried as I knew there was uphill that I could close the gap or pass. The first one we came to was a small technical climb. I downshifted to get in the best gear for the climb and dropped my chain. Besides dropping it also stuck. I grimaced as I watcher Theresa knowing I may have missed a good chance to catch and pass. I made the climb and continued on seeing her on the small uphill technical stuff, but never getting close enough. I had another chain drop on the course which of course was not at a good point. Then we came to the down hill. By this time Theresa was out of my sights and I was concentrating on the course. I went down fairly well came out of the single track and came to the part that I knew was good for me the long climb. I saw Theresa and thought all I need to do is stay on my bike. I did for 3/4 of the hill until my tire skid out and around forcing me off my bike. I would like to say I ran up the hill, but I didn't. I went fast and pushed past a few people, but not fast enough. I was walking and Theresa had crested and was heading downhill. I got to the top of the hill and headed down. I went fast hoping I might meet Theresa at the final sprint out. I actually went too fast and ended up wiping out on the final corner around to the finish, and once again dropping my chain. I started to fix it and then realized it was probably faster to run in, so I ran jumped on my bike and finished. I took 2nd and did really well. There were no asthma attacks and although my pressure is low I felt great. It was a fun race.

Yellowstone National Park

We took off the morning July 24th for Jackson Hole to race and go to Yellowstone National Park. I was hoping to leave by 7 in the morning, but it took longer getting kids ready and the car completely packed, so we ended up leaving by 9. Oh well, I only had a tiny schedule to keep. Royce had just gotten off work, so he slept in the car while I drove. I guess it was contagious, because everyone else was slept too.The bad part about all the sleeping was I did not have anyone to navigate for me, and I have not driven to Jackson or Evanston, which was on the way to Jackson. As I approached our first intersection Mandy woke up and started asking me a bunch of questions and I was trying to figure out what happened after I exited. From the directions I thought I was supposed to exit again within 1/2 a mile. Wrong! Of course it took driving 10 miles back tracking and going back to figure this out. It was about this time Shandy woke up and tried to help navigate. She tried, but I had to pull over more than once to read the directions t make sure I was on the right route or taking the correct exit. With all of the misturns we got into Jackson a little after 3 pm.

By this time Karl was waiting up at the race course. Unfortunately he ended up waiting another hour while we got checked in, unpacked an changed for the ride. The kids (Mandy, Joey and Johnny) rode a couple of laps of their course while Shandy waited and Karl and I took off to ride our course. This course it technical and fun. There are 2 different points where you ride across planks that are zig zagged together. The first time I was intimidated and walked across. The second time was a surprise and I popped up on the plank went oh s*-%, s#*%, s!$% and fell to the side. Karl laughed--it was very funny. He then had me go back and coached me over the planks. Once I learned how to go over it was not so bad. The course was not completely marked, and at one point Karl was not sure we took the right path so he back tracked and I followed another rider. We eventually ended up at the bottom of this big hill climb. We had the choice of a single track or the climb. We took the single track. Oooops we took the wrong turn. Oh well, it was okay. Karl beat me back and we got the kids and left. Mandy was funny as we left. She found out she had to do three laps and she said "mom, there is no way I can do 3 laps it will kill me." If you have heard Mandy talk you would know exactly how funny this was.

Back at the motel Mandy changed into her swim suit and swam. Lucky for us there were 2 other families from the team with girls her age and they swam together for the rest of the night.
Next morning it was off to Yellowstone National Park. We took the West Entrance and headed to Mammoth Springs. The first sight we saw was a waterfall on the side of the road. After the falls we continued on and soon came upon two very large Elk.
After seeing the Elk we drove on Mammoth Springs. At Mammoth Springs we walked the built trail and looked how the springs had changed the environment. It is amazing how there is living and dead vegetation throughout the hot springs. One shot of the springs looks like a ghost face. Can you tell from the family picture we are a little bit tired--at least Mandy is.After leaving Mammoth Springs we drove past a rock formation out of no where. We saw a pine tree growing right out of a rock.We continued on our way heading to see Old Faithful. We saw another water fall. After the falls we stopped at Norris Geyser. I was able to get a picture of Steamboat Geyser going off. I also like the picture of Cistine Springs. I took a lot of pretty pictures of the area, but don't want to make this too long.
By the time we finished looking at the geysers at Norris we were tired and decided to head back to the motel. I thought Mandy was tired, but as soon as we got to the motel she was swimming with friends again until 10. It took until 11 to get her to sleep. She was so wound up she wanted to talk and talk. This is the draw back of sharing a room with your kids. But it is also funny.

The next day was race day. I raced and Royce volunteered. It was a fun race. After the race we went on a gondala ride and Mandy got to bungee jump. Her face shows fun, fear and at one point a look of wanting to toss her cookies.

After playing it was time to go home. The ride was good. Mandy slept the entire time except the last hour, Shandy slept and Royce navigated. When we arrived to Park City we drove right in to a big rain, thunder and lightening storm. It was very dark and ominous. We also a fire being put out on the road after Heber and up in Bridal Veil Falls. After the long, fun vacation it was great to be home to rest.

Wolverine Ridge Weekend

We went to the Evanston area 2 weeks ago and stayed and Dot and Karl's cabin. While there I got to pre-ride the course. Dot was my guide, and all I have to say is the course is great. What a fun and beautiful course. Dot knows this course like the back of her hand and without her I would have gotten lost. It is funny how the course lines can change. While I was riding I was going down a hill and had to pull over for 4 ATVs. After they were gone so was my line I was supposed to ride.

Mandy had a blast playing with Joey and Johnny. Karl took the kids to dead man mountain and from the pictures they look like they had a blast. Mandy couldn't get enough of riding on the ATV.

Icup #10 - Snowbird

I was happy at some of the things I accomplished at this race and not has happy about some other things. This race starts on a gravel road and quickly goes onto a single track. I started out good. I was behind Dot as we entered the single track and had her close in my eye as we were going along. As I rode I was really pleased, because I cleared everything I had problems with on the pre-ride. Then we came to this switchback. I didn't have problems on the pre-ride, but this time I skidded out and down. I got off my bike, but did not have the energy to run up and around the switchback to get back on my bike. I got up and then waited as Jolene went by. I was glad to have her in front of me. We continued on the trail and I did pretty well up until the moment we entered Dick Bass and then once again I skidded out and could not get my tire to grip. I jumped off my bike and walked up a bit to find a spot to get back on. At this point I got passed by a new rider in our division Ali. Jared also started yelling at me to get on my bike. I am glad he did, because I needed the extra push. I sure was not feeling 100% as I rode up the hill. There came a point when I was ready to pass Ali, and make a move towards Jolene when all of the sudden I decided not to. I don't know why, but it was not in me to make any moves. I went down the gravel road okay at the first part, but the lower half I got slower and slower. After the gravel road it was back to the single track, around the road, more single track and then up the road for a second loop. My second loop once again I cleared everything but the switchback. Happy I could do this, but I was not very fast. As I entered Dick Bass I could see Jolene and Ali and thought for sure I could put it in to high gear and close the gap some. Well, as luck would have it this was not going to happen. About half way up I started to black out. I backed of and spun and at one point walked.....so disappointed about the walking part. I don't like to walk hills. The loop went well, and I ended up in 4th place. I am happy with how I did on the single track but wished I felt better about he hill climbs.

About 10 minutes after the finish as I was talking to friends I started to pass out. I quickly sat down and continued to pass out. Jared and my husband took me over to the medic truck. Where I rested in an almost lying down position. While I was there Royce saw Karl and asked him to come over. Karl was great. He figured out I had low blood pressure and told me what to do to get it up. I drank lots of water and got some food in to me which helped to bring it up. To let you know exactly how great Karl was, while he was racing he stopped and asked if my blood pressure was up. Now that's a nice guy. Eventually we got it to 90/58 and I was able to sit up without blacking out. We never got it up past that, but at least I was able to walk without passing out. The rest of the afternoon consisted of sitting under the team canopy, eating good food and talking with others from the team.
On a side note, my pressure is still low 90/58 and we don't know why. I saw the doctor today and he doesn't know why either. I am still light headed and tired, but hopefully this is just residual from the race.
Riding the single track.
Podium for the Women 35+ Division.
Mandy had a good race. This race she had to do 3 laps and rode the same single track I rode. There was a lot of walking, but there was also some riding. I am so impressed with how her riding skills have improved.

2 Long Hours

Tonight was my final tournament game for women's softball. We were in the championship bracket, so all we had to do was win the game and it was over--we didn't. Our game tonight was full of errors, but worse than anything was we could not get on our sticks. Normally we hit, hit and hit, but tonight we were shut down. I hit to the same place all night--ugh. Usually I choose where I hit, but I guess not tonight. Occassionally on a team someone will have an off ngiht, but our whole team had an off night. The weird thing is we were all ready to play. And if you can't tell we also lost the second game. The worst part there were over 10 runs walked. I think I saw the most action of the entire night (I caught for both games except for the last 15 minutes). Oh well, one last tournament game tomorrow. If all goes well with that I will be palying 3 hours.

Side note....one of our cats went to the groomer today. Check out the results.

BEFORE - long hair and weighed down.

AFTER- trimmed & happy, checkout the hanging tummy

I Want to Feel the Pain

How crazy is that statement, I know, but I think I would rather feel the pain than stop because I can't breathe. I went and pre-rode Snowbird with Jolene and Dot, and only got about 2 miles before my exercise induced asthma (eia) kicked in. Normally all I have to do is back of the pedals and spin and I am fine. However this time that did not work. I actually had to stop and wait for by breathing to calm down. As soon as it did I would get pedaling again and it would start up again. There was no letting up. I even had problems going down hill! This is why I would like to feel the pain. I have only felt the burn in my legs in a couple of times, and it ended as soon as I got to the top of the hill. I think it would be great to have to quite because my muscle ache and burn versus quitting because I can't breathe. I hear everyone talk about the pain and the push and I think I am not pushing myself hard enough, because I don't feel the pain. Well I am crossing my fingers I will feel it at the race Saturday, and that the eia will not bother me.
All is green and beautiful at Snowbird.

AF Canyon

I did the loop again yesterday with Jolene and her sister Dawn. You should see the flowers, they are beautiful and taller than me on my bike! I was really sore when I started to ride because I played 3 hours of softball on Thursday and 2 hours of softball on Wednesday. To most this wouldn't be a big deal, but I catch, so that many hours of squats can be a killer on the legs. I was worried how the ride would affect me since my legs hurt, but it ended up being just the thing I needed. The ride worked out much of the soreness and it on top of it, it was a great ride.

Check out the flowers... they are right before the cascade springs road.

Payson Trails

This is going to be short, I have had several softball games the last few nights due to tournament, and not a lot of time to blog. Hopefully the pictures will do the trail justice. I went with Stephanie, Paige and Jolene yesterday to try out some of the Payson trails. We parked at Bennie's Creek and then shuttled up to Frank Young Canyon Trail. We started here went on to Rock Springs Trail and ended on Bennie's Creek. The trails were great. There were a lot of fallen trees and logs, and a few places the trail had been diverted due to the fall trees. I tried to get over a couple of logs and was successful and then there were a few a looked at and it was a no go. I probably should have at least tried. Some of them are easy to get over until you get to the other side and end up high centered. Of course I did not know which of these would cause a problem so some I tried and others I did not. After all of the logs and trees we came up to a beautiful meadow with yellow flowers everywhere. What a gorgeous sight to see. That meadow was sooooo beautiful. After the meadow things got a little precarious on the trail. The trail deep dust which made it difficult for me to maneuver my bike, and there was a lot of maneuvering needed. There were tree roots all along the trail and you would have to decide which root was the least menacing the one on the right or left and sometimes this would be a last second decision and you hoped you took the correct line. And even if you did take the correct line you had to do everything to keep your bike upright and keep from skidding out. I loved the entire trail, even the difficult part with the loose dirt, rocks and roots. I made it without any endos, wipeouts or crashes and it helped get some of my confidence back for riding downhill.

Near the first of the trail...time for group picture
One more picture of the group...I haven't figured out how to auto shoot.
